Welcome to the Alpenbahnen Spitzingsee
Known as one of the most popular ski resorts in Upper Bavaria in winter, the area around Spitzingsee invites you to hike, climb or simply relax in summer. Situated at an altitude of 1,100 to 1,800 meters, the region is picture-book Upper Bavaria: impressive views, cosy mountain huts, colourful mountain meadows and rugged rocks leave nothing to be desired for nature lovers and those seeking peace and quiet.
Some of the most beautiful climbing and hiking routes start at the mountain stations of the cable cars. The Taubenstein gondola lift and the Stümpfling 4-seater chairlift take guests quickly, comfortably and safely to the mountain world of Taubenstein, Roßkopf and Stümpfling.
About the Alpenbahnen Spitzingsee
With the Spitzingsee-Tegernsee skiing and hiking area, the Alpenbahnen Spitzingsee open up two of the most popular excursion and vacation destinations in Upper Bavaria.
The Stümpfling and Sutten lifts - two modern four-seater chairlifts with weather protection hoods - connect the Spitzingsee high valley, which is part of the Schliersee region, with Lake Tegernsee, which is known far beyond the region's borders.
Between the mountain stations of the two lifts, the Jagahütt'n with its large sun terrace invites you to take a break. The rustic hut, some of whose buildings are over 100 years old, is a popular destination for hikers and winter sports enthusiasts.
In summer, the mountain cart track is the attraction on the Stümpfling. With all-terrain go-karts equipped with disc brakes, you can race downhill on a 3.5-kilometre track. On the other side of Lake Spitzingsee, the high alpine Taubenstein with its rugged rocks and gentle alpine meadows beckons.
Alpine meadows.
Some of the most beautiful hiking and climbing routes in the region start at the mountain station of the Taubensteinbahn, which belongs to Alpenbahnen Spitzingsee.
In winter, the pistes around the Stümpfling and the Roßkopf are transformed into the traditional and popular Spitzingsee-Tegernsee ski area. The predominantly intermediate slopes are ideal for leisure skiers, but beginners and adrenaline junkies also get their money's worth here.
Every Thursday and Friday evening, Alpenbahnen Spitzingsee turns night into day and offers floodlit skiing on the popular Stümpfling main run.
Ski tourers, on the other hand, will find their Eldorado on the Taubenstein.

The Taubenstein gondola lift at Spitzingsee has been transporting guests for half a century.
Construction of the then ultra-modern circulating gondola lift by the Pohlig company (PHB) began in 1971. The ambitious construction project was financed on the initiative of the then mayor of Schliersee, Ludwig Bachhofer, via a public limited company in which the municipality of Schliersee and Hypobank were involved. After only nine months of construction, the cable car was inaugurated and put into operation on March 24, 1972. Unfortunately, the economic success fell short of expectations, so that the cable car changed hands for the first time just ten years after construction. In 2003, the newly founded Alpenbahnen Spitzingsee GmbH took over the Taubensteinbahn together with the lifts on the Stümpfling.
To this day, the cable car with its nostalgic charm reliably transports excursionists, mountain enthusiasts, climbers and hikers to the mountain station at 1,613 meters directly below the striking rock face of the Taubenstein. Since 2015, however, the lift has only been in operation in summer.
A special feature from the early days is the mural in the ticket hall from 1972 by the Schliersee artist Emil Sogor, who now lives in South Africa. It shows the village of Spitzingsee with the Taubensteinbahn as a landmark and has been for 50 years.
TOURISM AT SPITZINGSEE
FIRST PLANS TO BUILD A 4-STAR HOTEL
Until the early 1970s, there was only the Alte Wurzhütte, the Willy-Merkl-Haus and the old "Mayerhof" hotel at Spitzingsee.
In 1970, Josef Schörghuber had the plan to build a new 4-star hotel at Spitzingsee. As a building contractor and visionary, this plan was quickly realized and the hotel opened in December 1972. At the same time, the Taubenstein gondola lift was built at Spitzingsee and also opened in 1972.
